Harvest Summer is over. Fall is upon us.
In many areas of the world "...the harvest is
past" and people have prepared the soil for the
next crop, whatever it is, and have settled in
for a long winter. Here in Kansas the corn and
milo have been harvested, and the pheasants have
taken shelter, as hunters invade their habitat.
Me? I‘m not a hunter or a fisherman or a
golfer; probably best describe me as a "retired"
couch potato! |
I have just spent a little time “reviewing” some of the old comments I had written while in SE Alaska and the last one I did earlier this year. It does not seem possible that summer of 2009 is passing so quickly. School will be starting in a few weeks, swimming pools will be closing, and we all will be counting the days left before Thanksgiving and/or Christmas. While serving as Children’s Pastor at Northland Cathedral back in the late 80s, one Sunday I asked the children “Does time go fast or slow to you?” and the majority of them lifted their hands indicating it going fast. I would suspect that 20 years later they may feel the about same, with the exception, we are told, many spend as many as 4 to 5 hours a day playing video games. (I think that is what they are called?) With my family it seems we are controlled by the clock for doctors' appointments and our pets. One of the 3 of us will have an appointment once a week, and we try and go to the “Y” at least 3 times a week, I do volunteer work for Gracious Promise Foundation once a week, church schedules, so as you can see “time” is still of essence to the Marshall household. The pets? Buddy our dog and Molly ‘our’ cat both think they own us. Many people are concerned, and should be, about what is happening world-wide and within this good “ole” U.S. of A. God’s Word tells us to be on the “alert,” “stand guard,” “be ready,” to “occupy” and to “watch” and when we see things coming to pass as have been prophesied in the Bible and spoken to us by Jesus, Himself … "Do you not say, `There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest'? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes, and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest. Already he who reaps is receiving wages, and is gathering fruit for life eternal; that he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. For in this case the saying is true, `One sows, and another reaps.' I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labor." John 4:35-38 (NASB) Look at the “time” element in these verses. Four months until harvest; reaping produces wages and fruit for “eternal” life. With the political issues at hand, world conditions as they are, wars being fought, threats made by nations of the world, money problems from governmental decisions, moral issues, threats to “faith” based ministries... “Times” are unsettling and makes us wonder just how close is the “time” for Jesus to catch up His Church. It is up to each one of us to determine how we are going to spend our “time.” Me? I still long to go back to Alaska but that’s out of the question, but I still am accountable as to have I spend my time. How about you? 25-JUL-09

I have been pretty silent for some time now and thought perhaps IF I would just take a moment and do a little thinking just possibly something might surface. In January of this year I put together the "makings" of "On the Road with the Marshalls" newsletter but for some reason or another, that is as far as it got. With a new year just around the corner just maybe, just maybe it will happen... oh, by the way, we hope you had a "Merry Christmas"! The Bible tells us that from the mouth of babes...or something close to that, the prophet Isaiah penned in 59:21 "And as for Me, this is My covenant with them," says the LORD: "My Spirit which is upon you, and My words which I have put in your mouth, shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your offspring, nor from the mouth of your offspring's offspring," says the LORD, "from now and forever" (Isaiah 59:21 NASB). The reason I bring this up is when our family gathered at our granddaughter Jami's home for our Post Thanksgiving dinner and before eating, we each one shared what we were thankful for. Starting with our oldest great-granddaughter, Jacey, and 16 "thank yous" later, our youngest great-grandson, Landen, who is 2-and-a-half, was the most profound, when he said without any prompting "...I am thankful for my Mom!" We all applauded him for what he had shared. Wow! Awesome, huh? This Christmas was my 77th one and I do rejoice in all that Jesus, God's One and Only Son, has been to me and to my family. One by one they are coming to know the Lord and my goal is for every one of them to KNOW Jesus in a very personal way. There are many Christmas memories dating back almost too far to remember. Like I remember when all my sisters got was an orange in a stocking and not a pretty red one. Or the year the folks got me a football and then the year a family who were going to be gone for Christmas gave us their Christmas tree. Their son suggested they give it to the Marshalls. My sister, Marcille, worked for them doing housework and it is possible she was asked about us having a tree... I don't know how it all happened but we had been to McPherson, Kansas to attend a Church of the Nazarene youth rally. When we got home and the driver turned into the driveway, the car lights shown on sparkling "things" in the window. This was the first Christmas tree we had ever had. This happened a few years before I joined the U.S. Navy. It is difficult to even "imagine" sharing something new when it comes to Christmas, but new songs are being composed every year to honor the birth of our newborn King! Sermons preached by our Pastors, children's programs, special choir musical productions and just recently the Christmas special in Washington, D.C. and Christmas celebrations for our men and women in the military serving our country, away from their families, making that ultimate sacrifice for US. Then we have the ACLU fighting for a very small percentage of the people in our country trying to "snuff" out anything relating to Christmas... folks, without Christ, there is NO Christmas! “...And when eight days were completed before His circumcision, His name was then called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb (Luke 2:21 NASB). He has a name that is above any name, and...He IS the only way to the Father...and no one will come to the Father without the Holy Spirit's calling. So, I bring this to a close and trust you do KNOW Him! As the old chorus goes:
"JESUS, JESUS, JESUS, SWEETEST NAME I KNOW" |
Pete and Repeat sat on a fence, Pete fell off, who was left? Repeat! Pete and Repeat sat on a fence…does this sound familiar with the political “jargon” we are hearing day after day? I guess you get my point and just think we have less than 40 days to hear it over and over again. All I can say is “…may the best team win!” However, I have the answer for everyone…vote for “…Ron Paul and let him settle it all!” Seriously, I wonder how God can have it all in control when it is up to you and me to vote our conscience, as good Americans should. Even in elections, God does leave the choice up to people, and whomever is elected, we must honor the position and respect the person in that position whether we agree or not! I AM glad I am an American where we still have this wonderful right and privilege to vote!
It is my belief that we must hold our nation's leaders in prayer and sure, let's pray for our enemies. God IS more than able to make the changes that would benefit all peoples regardless of culture, race, and/or political position.
I remember a chorus we used to sing a long time ago. “My Lord knows the way through the wilderness, all I have to do is follow, (repeat), strength for today, mine always, all I need for tomorrow; my Lord knows the way through the wilderness, all I have to do is follow.” The truth factor is: “We must keep our eyes upon the Leader (Jesus) and follow as we should.” When and not IF we do this, He will make us into fishers of men and then qualify us to disciple them. Ya want some scripture support for this?
"…And walking by the Sea of Galilee, He (Jesus) saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And He said to them, 'Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.' And they immediately left the nets, and followed Him." Matthew 4:18-20 (NASB)
There is another analogy relating to a wilderness besides the political one. and it is the financial one that our nation is facing at this moment. This could be a time when we become fearful, and rightly so, BUT I personally believe “…the times for our faith to be tested are yet ahead of us.” Oh, we can run and hide but there is really no place for us to hide! We are to keep our TRUST in God’s ability to see us through any wilderness that may come our way, whether it be financial, political, physical, or emotional. Just remember to keep your eyes on our Leader, Jesus, and His Father is our Father and He will not fail any one of us, so let’s believe His Word, ok?
Romans 8:28 is still as true as the day it was penned “…And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose!” (NASB)
And just a little more to support God’s faithfulness to each of us.
“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? Who will bring a charge against God's elect? God is the one who justifies; who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? Romans 8:31-35 (NASB)

Recently I have been thinking a lot about “invitations” ... and considering the sincerity of some of them. Often we are given a general invitation to the general population. Such as: One of the traditions of Native culture in SE Alaska, where we lived for over 5 years, was for a “memorial” at the end of a year’s mourning for a deceased loved one. Included in this memorial and celebration would be a Native dinner which everybody on Prince of Wales Island and elsewhere were invited to attend and bring food, as there would be hundreds of relatives and friends would be attending. You did not have to be related to be included. This was not an invitation without a date, location and time indicating you were invited no matter how you heard about it, and you knew you would be received and welcomed. This happened to Marge and me almost immediately upon our arrival in Hydaburg, Alaska in 1996. It helped us get quickly acquainted with the Native culture. At one of our very first memorial dinners, I asked one of the ladies what I was eating and she wouldn't tell me, because she wanted me to try it . . . it was some kind of seafood and I can't tell you even now what “it” was. Back to the idea of invitations. What about when someone tells you “…come over sometime”? Or maybe “…come over anytime”? How sincere are these invitations? Wouldn’t it make you feel much better if you were asked “…we’d like to have you come over next week for dinner -- which would be better Tuesday or Friday?” Put some “meat” on the invitation rather being so vague about it that the recipient won't be sure whether or not you mean it. Perhaps your invitation might be “…next Friday we are having a fish fry around 6:30 p.m. And we’d like for you to come. Is this possible?” The Prophet Isaiah issued one of the best invitations found in the Bible when he penned “Come now, and let us reason together," says the LORD, "though your sins are as scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they will be like wool. If you consent and obey, you will eat the best of the land; but if you refuse and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword. Truly, the mouth of the LORD has spoken.” Isaiah 1:18-20 (NASB) In this invitation he states the “when” “IF you consent and obey” and the result would be “…you will eat the best of the land!” Wow! All because we accepted the invitation to reason with Him! Have you accepted this particular invitation? Our family has received invitations to attend a wedding. It's from our youngest son, David and his wife Shannon, announcing the marriage of their only daughter, Halee Marshall and her high school sweetheart Marshall Holland. This is a sincere and important invitation inviting their friends and family to witness this celebration of marriage. There is a specific date and time for this event to take place. Have we accepted, yep, sure have! For many of us we get so “caught up” in the things to do, places to go, etc., etc., etc., that we fail to acknowledge our need to simply slow down, take a deep breath, relax a little and respond to the invitation of Jesus…"…Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and YOU SHALL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. For My yoke is easy, and My load is light." Matthew 11:28-29 (NASB) It seems it is “more so” now that I have been retired for a number of years, and am still wondering what there is for me to do. At 77 years of age, not wore out yet, at least I don’t think so, still in pretty good health with a yearning to “go back to Alaska” but that is to no avail. However, I do wear an Alaska T-shirt almost every day to help me remember to pray for our friends there. There's an old hymn that addressed this issue: “Come Unto Me, I Will Give You Rest” 24jul08 |
